This video features a Mexican nationalist movement which talks of Aztlan, the name give to the areas in the United States lost to Mexico. Supporters consider Mexicans have an enduring right to live in the United States as their homeland, land taken from them in the conflicts of the nineteenth century. It wasn’t until the end of this video that I realised it was being used as warning propaganda on behalf of three organisations seeking reduction in immigration:- FairUS.org, The Federation for American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA.com – in favour of lower immigration levels, and CAPSweb.org (Californians for Population Stabilization), but the video was interesting.
Both opinions seem deeply entrenched and it’s hard to see a viable solution. The Republican fears are of too many ‘alien’ immigrants pouring into the country and failing to assimilate (to become American) There is great opposition in Mexico to the Arizona Immigration Law. A Republican view put across by Congressman McClintock is right wing and exclusive but may well be a view held by a large percentage of the population, especially those living in the States most affected by the immigration question, citing their numbers and their language as two threatening aspects. The Mexican viewpoint seems to be more linked to what they see as their human rights and in the case of the Aztlan support.
